Pregnancy Foundation, SMFM establish Queenan Fellowships

Dr. John T. QueenanA new fellowship program in global health recognizing the career of Contemporary OB/GYN’s founding Editor-in-Chief, Dr. John T. Queenan, has been announced by The Pregnancy Foundation and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM). Donations are being sought to support the fellowship and tickets are still available for a fundraising dinner in Dr. Queenan’s honor, to be held at the SMFM 35th Annual Meeting next month in San Diego.

The Queenan Fellowships for Global Health are designed to train future leaders in perinatal health to provide bold and sustained advancement in obstetric practice in underserved areas around the globe. Through research and education, they will also help stem unnecessary loss of life to mothers and babies compromised by pregnancy complications in areas disproportionately affected by poverty.  Opportunities available through the program will include a mentored research fellowship at the World Health Organization, a visiting teaching fellowship at African maternal-fetal medicine programs, investigator-initiated research projects worldwide and fellowships for faculty from resource-limited settings.

Dr. Queenan is currently professor and chair emeritus at Georgetown University School of Medicine, served as deputy editor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and has been honored as a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists ad eundem. A pioneer in Rhesus disease management and prevention with almost 200 scientific papers and textbooks, he has also focused his career on global health through work with the US Agency for International Development, on multiple international sabbaticals, and implementation of resource-based educational courses for healthcare providers in India.

The fundraising dinner will be held on Thursday, February 5 at 7 p.m. at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. To purchase dinner tickets at $150 each or for more information on the Queenan Fellowships for Global Health, visit http://www.thepregnancyfoundation.org/Queenan.
